I posted this in another thread but I figure it was something everyone could benefit from, so I am posting in its own thread to increase the chance people will see based on the title.

The creative department where I work almost exclusively creates content as MPEG 2 file format. I do find when I playback the MPEG 2 files in InfoCaster that they tend to bog down the system when they are playing back in a larger region size, so I am using the FREE Windows Media Encoder to convert my MPEG 2 files to WMV files, it corrects the stutter/smooth playback issues 95% of the time.

You can download the Encoder from the following link:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/encoder/default.aspx

Here is the process I use to convert them.

1) Open Windows Media Encoder

2) select "Convert a file" when prompted for the type of session you want to do.

3) You will then be asked for a path to the source file, and a location for an output file. Browse to each location and hit NEXT.

4) The next window will ask you what type of distribution system you will use, choose the first one in the list called "File Download(computer playback).

5) The next window will ask you how you want to encode your video and audio, select the top option called "high definition quality video( 5 Mbps VBR).

6) The next window allows you to enter some general information about your file (name, etc)... fill in whatever you like here and hit next.

7) On the next screen, you will see a summary of the options selected, be sure to uncheck(not select) the option at the bottom of the window that says "begin converting when I click finish". The reason being is we still want to change a few parameters in the encoder before converting the file.

8) Now the encoder is open, you will want to go and set up the resolution settings. Look for a button called "Properties" it is to the left of the "Start encoding button"... click this button and then select the "video size" Tab. At the bottom of this tab you will see a section that allows you to set the size of the desired output file. Select the "CUSTOM" option from the resize drop down menu. If your desired video size in 1024x768(or whatever you want) just enter Width and Height windows, and then hit the "Apply" button at the bottom of the window.

9) You are now ready to start encoding. So click on the "Start Encoding" button at the top of the Windows Media encoder. It should now go through 2 passes of encoding, and once that is done, you should have a much more efficient WMV file which is much smaller in file size then your original MPEG file.

I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.

... nice howto...

And.. the media encoder has a nice option... you can de-interlace the video when encoding.. as most clips are shot on some sort of video it is interlaced. Infocasters on VGA play out in a progressive way... with this tool you can fix your video.
